Product specifications

Upgrading to titanium ball studs is one of the most popular "functional bling" modifications for RC racers. It’s primarily about shedding unsprung weight—the weight of parts not supported by the suspension—which directly improves how quickly your car reacts to bumps and steering inputs.

Why Switch to Titanium?

Feature

Titanium

Steel

Weight

~45% lighter

Standard weight

Durability

High strength-to-weight; won't rust

Prone to rust; can bend under high impact

Precision

Usually CNC-machined for smoother fit

Often mass-produced/stamped

Aesthetics

Available in "burnt blue," gold, or black

Plain silver or black oxide

Key Benefits:

  • Reduced Unsprung Weight: Helps the suspension recover faster, keeping your tires on the ground more consistently.

  • Lower Center of Gravity: Replacing 10–12 steel studs across the top of the shock towers and hubs subtly lowers the car’s overall CG.

  • Zero Corrosion: Unlike steel studs that can rust and cause ball cups to pop off or bind, titanium stays smooth forever.

Pro Tips for Installation

  1. Don't Over-Tighten: Titanium is strong but can be more brittle than steel. If you over-torque a stud into a plastic mount, you risk snapping the head or stripping the plastic.

  2. Use New Plastics: It is highly recommended to use brand-new ball cups when switching to titanium. Old cups might have wear patterns from the steel studs that could cause "slop" or unwanted movement.

  3. Lube the Threads: When threading titanium into hard, carbon-infused plastics for the first time, a tiny drop of black grease or even shock oil on the threads can prevent the plastic from galling.

  4. The "Steel Tap" Trick: If the plastic is very stiff, thread a standard steel screw in first to "cut" the threads, then remove it and install your titanium ball stud.
